Why I allowed my husband go into politics- Sunmbo Segun-Okeowo

COULD YOU PLEASE LEAD US INTO YOU EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND?

I went to Federal Polytechnic, Ede. I am an OND holder anyway, but by the grace of God what i am today is not because of my educational background or whatever, because after i got out of the school… I got married while in school, so since that time i’ve been in the hand of God and i’ve been following my passion and the leading of God. So, i’m a born teacher, i teach with pleasure, i just like to teach but i’m still trying to pursue more educational certificate. I’m planning to do school management by the grace of God but i’ve not started.

WHAT LED YOU TO ACTING?

Like i told you that whatever i am today is by the grace of God it’s not because of my educational background. I didn’t read Theater Art but i saw that i have a gift of acting while i was in primary school,i had a gift of acting, so i used to act in my primary school days, in secondary school the same thing. When i was in secondary school i gave my life to christ and i joined a drama group in the church where i came across my husband and i’ve been in drama group since that time until i got married, even after wedding i’m still into drama. Being a drama minister is just by the leading of the holyspirit.

AS A MOTHER AND WIFE HOW DO YOU COPE AND MANAGE THE HOUSE WITH THE MINISTRY?

God has been helping me but i have to be sincere with you. By the time my children were still young it was tough, there were times i will not be able to go to ministration with my husband, there were times i was pregnant and  they will go out i will not be able to follow them but i kept my passion even though i was not with them on the field i still pray, i was part of the ministry. One thing most people don’t understand is that you don’t need to act to really do drama ministry, there are some people behind the scene, there are some people that are praying. So, those times i don’t go out for locations but now nothing is holding me back. the children are grown up but  because the passion has been there it is easy for me to follow.

GISTIN’ WITH SINGLES IS A PROGRAM OF MANY YEARS STANDING HOW DID THE PROGRAMME STARTED AND  WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVES?

The Lord laid the passion in our heart it was a burden from the Lord seeing the way God lead us through in our marital life, so it became a burden in our heart that many people are missing it,many youth are not what God wants them to be because they are missing it in the place of marriage. Some that started as drama ministers after they got married no longer keep the passion and the ministry that God gave to them as a youth so we just have the burden that we can impact the lives of these children that whatever God has given unto you as a youth that you can still maintain it and not allow your marriage take it from you, that was the starting point for GISTIN’ WITH SINGLES. The purpose is to impact youth  lives in making right choice in their marriage having the future that God wants for them, that is the purpose.

WHY DID YOU ZONE THE ROGRAMME TO LASPOTECH THIS TIME AROUND?

 Last year we were suppose to be here, it’s a programme we wish to take around churches and campuses because the people here accepted us, one thing is, anywhere we are accepted we are ready to go and minister to souls and  impact the  youths, so we’ve been here once and the people here want us back, it is because of their willingness. We can’t go to where they are not willing to host us.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE ACHIEVMENTS OF THE PROGRAMME SO FAR?

The Lord has been so faithful, we have products of GISTIN’ WITH SINGLES they are married today and they have testimonies and God is keeping their marriages and ministries. God has been so faithful.

AS AN ACTRESS AND PRODUCER WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

As an actress one thing that helps me is that i put myself in the position of the character that i’m acting and i allow the part to minister to me. When i’m producing i like same passion to be seen in the cast putting themselves in character with burden for souls,burden for people that are passing through that kind of situations, so it inspires me to do more for the Lord.

THERE IS A RUMOUR THAT BECAUSE OF THE POLITICAL AMBITION OF KSO THAT YOU NO MORE GO ON LOCATIONS,YOU NO MORE PRODUCE FILMS AND PEOPLE NO MORE INVITE YOU FOR LOCATIONS, HOW TRUE IS THIS?

That is NOT TRUE, my husband was still on location i think two months ago i can’t remember. We go on locations, i was on location two days ago in ogijo, i will be in another location  by june 22, Mummy Deborah Animashaun, she is shooting her movie in ibadan i’m going to be there so we still produce films. There is our latest, EEWO IDOLU, HOUSE ON THE ROCK SERIES is still on, we are shooting very soon, we are going on location very soon, so that is NOT TRUE.

WHY DID YOU SUPPORT YOUR HUSBAND TO GO INTO POLITICS?

When my husband discussed with me and said he was going into politics i was like my world was coming crumbling down. I told him it is not possible because i remember that when my father was alive he told all his children, he told us we must not involve in politics, politics was something we so much hated most in our family. So when my husband brought the idea of politics i was like, i don’t even entertain it i told him no and he is somebody that if i don’t support him to do something he doesn’t like to do it especially things of major impacts like that. He asked me to pray i said i will not pray because if i pray the answer i will receive is still no. I went for a programme, DAYSTAR LEADERSHIP ACADEMY and Pastor Sam Adeyemi was teaching us about leadership in the country showing us new image of “Oshodi”. That time oshodi was not what it is today and that is the vision he has for oshodi, mushin and all those side. As i was looking at the slides he was moving the slide as he was moving the slide the holyspirit told me “that is what i’m going to use you to do,” i started weeping i was not praying. He was not preaching that i should go into politics or nor anybody preached to me and i was sitting in the front. I started crying,  it was a large crowd, i could not hold it, my handkerchief was filled with tears. When i got home i told my husband what the holyspirit told me. We started praying about it and that was when he took the move so it is difficult for me today to kick against his move because i heard God even though it is tough,even though it is not easy. The way i heard God when he told me to go into drama ministry was the way i heard God when he told me that we should involve ourselves in politics so it is difficult for me to deny it.

SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT SUPPORTING HIM FOR HIS POLITICAL AMBITION SOMETIMES AGO SEEMS TO BE SUPPORTING HIM NOW, HE IS GETTING MORE ATTENTION, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE CAUSE?

(Smiles) Well, we are getting more enlightened and there is political education everywhere, you remember when we started drama some churches pursue some drama ministers out of their churches, today is no longer like that because they had a better understanding of what drama ministry is. So what i think is that people are getting more knowledge you know we used to believe that politicians are bad,politics is evil and things like that but we are getting to know that in actual fact government controls our lives. Government is in control of your life my brother, you are not born until the government says so anywhere you are you must present your birth certificate that is when you are born and it is the government that award birth certificate. The school you went to if you don’t have certificate for it even if you spend all your life in school and you don’t have certificate you have not gone to school. Government award you certificate because your school is approved so the certificate is government approved. If you get married  and you don’t have marriage certificate from the government whether the church likes it or not let them give you wedding certificate as far as you don’t have that government approved you can not go anywhere with it, they will tell you that you are not married to your wife, when you die you are not dead until we see death certificate, so what are we talking about. Politics is powerful. Government is powerful, how can we say we are not going to be involved in politics. People are getting enlightened about politics. We are getting more understanding so people are ready to support the vision.

RECENTLY, KSO FRIENDS INITIATIVES DID AN OPEN MARKET IN SIMAWA WHAT IS THE MOTIVE BEHIND THIS AND WHAT IS IT ALL  ABOUT?

The open market is all about relieving people that are in need which we think people in government should do. By the grace of God we plan improving on it and doing it better. It is not about KSO alone that is what brought about KSO Friends Initiatives, the free market we did was not just about KSO money it was his friends that brought materials. Some they were imported into the country, clothes, foodstuffs, we gave it to people free of charge. These are the things that we hope to do by the grace of God. You know as ministers of God we are used to giving, sometimes i feel like  how i wish God did not call us into politics and we just do this thing, imagine if my husband is not contesting i will do free market it makes more meaning, its not just about our involvement in politics it’s about vision and passion that God has given unto us to help people meet their needs.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR UPCOMING ACTRESS AND PRODUCER.

My advice for them is to stay with God and stay in God. The difference between drama ministry and secular world is the message that we have, it is not just about the story but the message that is powerful in us to deliver. I have heard of people who watched our films and right in their parlour they received deliverance. So that is what they should focus that is what they should not loose, they should not miss it. It is not just about acting it’s about blessing lives it is about people been blessed through your ministration when you act films.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT GOSPEL FILM NEWS?

Gospel Film News, i thank God for this initiative nobody told me about it i just stumbled on it on the internet and i watched. It is a great work. You see what, people say if you don’t blow your trumpet…. i can’t remember how they say it, we need to know that there are some times we need to make noise,there are sometimes you need to talk about yourself. When JOHN THE BAPTIST was in the world he said I AM  THE VOICE, he didnt hide it. They asked him are you the prophet he said I AM THE VOICE we need to let people know who we are. When i saw that vision i said whao this is a great work we need to make more noise, we need to tell people who we are, i pray God will give you people more strenght and grace in jesus name.
